“The Square” … 1915

This painting depicts what is known as “The Square” in Batesville, Mississippi.

The town of Batesville, Mississippi, was founded in the 1850s after the construction of the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroads.

Alice was inspired to paint this work because the town was the original home of her husband Mose Moseley. She modeled the painting after maps Mose drew of The Square from memory as it would have looked in 1915. The painting features characteristics of the time, such as the slew of vendors on horse carts as well as notable businesses from the time period.

The prominent green and gray color pallet of the painting is a stark difference from Ms. Alice’s usual usage of bright, unmixed colors. This choice in color could be an intentional addition that brings up visual associations with the past.
