Life Has So Many Angles Version 2

This colorful and abstract painting is much different than most of the works done by Ms. Alice. This separation in style is intentional. Ms. Alice said once in an interview that the beauty of her not having formal artistic training is that she can do as she pleases with her artwork. Her openness to break from a style is a hallmark of Alice’s work and personality.

The painting’s composition is an abstraction of multi-colored horizons. On these fields of color are animal and human figures engaging in work and play. The combination of activity and color makes for an exciting and happy feel. Like most of Moseleys works, her painting includes visual elements from the old south. One such feature can be seen on the barn with the painted sign reading “See Rock City.” The landmark would have been commonplace throughout the old south. The tradition of Rock City barns began in 1935 to draw passing tourists on the highway to the Tennessee landmark.

Alice Moseley was especially fond of this work, and its title. She enjoyed letting those that viewed the work interpret its meaning for themslves. To her, the title was a comment on perception, reality, understanding, and misunderstandings. The cautionary thought she wanted to convey was “Do not be too sure of your reality, because it is your perception of reality. What you see depends on the point of view you came to the table with.” She believed life does have many angles and most misunderstandings are truly misunderstandings.
