Garrett, Ginning and Guzzling

In 1980, Miss Moseley wrote to the Conwood Corportation of Memphis Tennessee, now known as the American Snuff Company, to inquire about the Garrett Snuff advertising slogan and signage. Here is the text of the response she received:

Dear Ms. Moseley:

Following are the words to a song which was used in the 1940s to advertise Garrett snuff:

“Get up to snuff. You’ve time enough
To see a brand new day. Get up to snuff.
Be bright enough
To feel fine and gay. For early in
the morning… and even late at night
Garrett Snuff is just the snuff
To make you feel all right.”

Unfortunately we do not have any record of exactly how this slogan was used other than reference to the expression “Get up to snuff”.

Attached is a photocopy of a metal sign which was used in the period after Wold War II. These signs were discontinued about twenty years ago due to the expense and the decline of stores where they could be fixed.

I’m sorry we can’t be more help but we will keep your name on file and will notify you if we should come across any more informaiton.

Sincerely,

E.C. Powell
Vice President of Marketing

Unfortunately we do not have the photocopy of the metal sign, but this original letter to Ms. Moseley is in the Museum’s archives.
