BATESVILLE SQUARE,CIRCA 1910- My mom used to set up every year at the Batesville Art Mart, a show which was held in a large grove, probably 5 acres, of mature pecan trees. It was held every year in May, I believe, and was really the only time that mom sold originals and prints in Batesville. The Batesville area was somewhat tepid towards art except for the Jimmy Seal family,Linda Pitcock and a few others, but it was always a successful show for my mom. At the first art mart, my mom cornered Sam Vick and Mr. Vick and my dad sat in their lawn chairs, under the pecan trees, and listed,as best they could remember, the names and location of stores on the square when they were boys. Their recollections were the basis for this painting and this print was the second one my mom had made, probably around 1970. Incidentally, Mr. Sam was famous in his earlier days as a member of the Babe Ruth era New York Yankees. Mr. Vick and his son,Conner, also had land where we had great quail hunts and great fun fishing for big bream in their stock pond. The Vicks also had a peach orchard where they let my mom and dad pick all the peaches they wanted. My mom loved canning pickled peaches.
