GET UP TO SNUFF,YOU'VE TIME ENOUGH- This scene is located in any and every town in the Mississippi Delta. We see a Murray cotton gin, mules pulling wagons full of cotton and the weather-beaten old gin building decorated with a Garrett Snuff advertisement and,in misippi english, a co- cola sign." My uncle Robert had a store in Lyon,Mississippi, a suburb of Clarksdale, and I believe, it was beside a gin like this one. When I was about 9, my parents and I visited Uncle Robert and Aunt Bess and, as I remember, the store had two of those old glass- top gas pumps out front, and a barrel-size coal oil pump in front of the store where people got kerosene for their pre-electricity lamps. Inside were several ice boxes full of real ice and co-colas, nu-grape and nehi big orange drinks. Also available were delicacies such as twinks and moon pies. The tobacco department had a few packs of Luckies or Camels. But mostly sold loose tobacco and papers for the less affluent limited nicotine addict, mail pouch and other chewing tobaccos and,of course, Garrett and other snuffs, much desired by the ladies. I need to ask my Cousin Bess about its legality, but I also seem to remember there were beers, such as Champagne Velvet and Goldcrest 51 being sold. Having been brought up in the middle of the bible belt, I remember I was somewhat shocked at the devil's brew being sold in Uncle Robert's store. I also remember a great big billboard advertising Bobo-Moseley Peach Orchards.
